- Q1：まずあなたのバックグラウンドを教えてもらえますか？
- 高校の時に好きだったパンクバンドPENNYWISEのMVに影響されスケートボードを始め、写真は趣味で撮っていました。
2007年にドメスティックスケートボードブランドであるLesque Skateboardsが産声を上げたときに専属フォトグラファーとして誘ってもらい、スケートの写真を撮り始めました。
現在はスタジオにも所属しながら自分の仕事や作品を撮り続けています。 - Q2：STRUMMERブランドはいつ始動しましたか？またそのきっかけは？
- 2015年9月です。
以前から自分の好きな風にPhoto Teeを作ってみたくて、その試作のために81BASTARDSの一人であるMHAKが持っていたブラシを素材として撮影し、プロトタイプを作ってみたのが最初です。MHAK本人も気に入ってくれたので、個展に合わせて数枚だけ限定販売してみようということになりました。
ちなみにSTRUMMERの由来は、自分が影響を受けたパンクバンドThe Clashのギターボーカルで今は亡きJoe Strummerから取りました。 - Q3：アートは人々に影響をもたらすと思いますか？もしそうであればどんな事だと思いますか？
- アートは必ず人の心に影響を与えるものだと思っています。価値観や概念は人それぞれ持っているものですが、それを押し付けることなく、その人自身の意思でアートに触れ、感動や驚きなどの感情に与える力は存分にあります。もちろん、興味がある無いも人それぞれですが、一生のうちに少なからず何かしらの影響を人々にもたらしていることは間違いないと言えます。アートには正解不正解という決まりきった答えがありません。表現したいように自由にやればいい。それがカルチャーと似ていることで、スケートも音楽も決まった答えなんてない。スポーツのように勝ち負けもない。好きなようにやればいいというのは、人の気持ちを開放的に、豊かにしてくれるものだと思います。
- Q4：作品を作る際にいつも心がけていることはありますか？
- レトロなモノだったり使い古したモノには人を魅了する力があると感じます。それを使ってきた人の感情だったり想いが入って、それに加えて歴史がそのモノをいい具合に風化させていくのだと思いますが、誰しもそういうモノに出会った時にグイッと引き込まれる瞬間ってあると思います。そういう魅力を放つモノのポートレートを残していきたいです。製作に心がけていることは、そのモノの存在感はもちろんのこと、ちょっとした遊び心をスパイスとしてひと味加えられるようにライティングだったり、Teeシャツになったときのモノの配置です。それと、Teeシャツ以外に毎回そのテーマに合ったおまけのような作品を作ることです。MHAKのときは裏面がポスターになるタブロイド紙。スケートトラックのときは紙にシルクスクリーンプリントで５０枚限定作品にしました。
- Q5：今回のコラボレーションで一番見てほしい所はどのような観点でしょうか？
- 少し大げさな言い方かもしれませんが、坩堝さんの今までのコラボの中でここまでゴリゴリのスケート絡みは少なかったのではないかと思います。そこに自分の撮った写真を落とし込めたこと、パッと見、この削れた金属の塊は何なんだろう？と思わせる坩堝とSTRUMMERのスパイスをお客さんに投げかけれたら嬉しいです。このスケートトラックにはスケーターの歴史が詰め込まれています。これを機にスケートに興味を持って始める人、写真を撮り始める人など、それこそ少しでも影響を与えられたらいいなと思います。
- Q6：最後に坩堝に参加しようと決めた理由を教えてください。
- アパレルブランドにもよりますが、アーティストコラボレーションというのはスポットやシーズンであっても毎回ではないことが多いと思います。それが坩堝では毎回どなたかアーティストが作品提供して、アートとアパレルのコラボを積極的にしているのが他ブランドでは珍しいし、アーティストにとってもありがたく、大変嬉しいことです。自分でこれだけのラインナップを作るとなると大変ですからね。また、坩堝の商品には遊び心が満載で、Q4で答えたようにちょっとした遊び心、スパイスの入ったものを出してくる意味では気持ちは似ているなと思います。その２つが参加の大きな要素でした。

- Q1：Firstly, could you tell us your background including your career?
- I had shot photos just for fun influenced by a music video of a punk band “PENNYWISE” which I loved when I was in high school.
In 2007, I was invited as a photographer attached to a domestic skateboarding brand “Lesque Skateboards” when it was founded, and started to shoot photos of skateboarding.
Currently, I also belong to a photo studio to do my job and shoot my work. - Q2： What age have you started your activity as an artist, and what did motivate you?
- It was in September 2015. I’d thought to make photo T-shirt with the way I like for long time, and it was first time that I took photos of brushes owned by an artist MHAK to make a prototype.Fortunately, MHAK himself also liked it, so we made to print it for a few pieces and exclusively sold at his exhibition.By the way, the brand name “STRUMMER” came from the guitar & vocalist of “The Clash”, Joe Strummer.
- Q3： Do you think art influences people? If you do, what kind of thing does it?
- I strongly believe that an art definitely influences people’s heart.Although each person has his/her own values and concepts which differ from others, there is enough power to touch people’s heart to impress and/or surprise them by just feeling an art with their own will without being forced,Of course, some people likes it and some others do not, but it is pretty sure that an art brings influence to people somewhat during their life.An art doesn’t have certain answer just like correct and wrong.Just do it your way.That point is similar to the culture, such as skateboarding and music don’t have certain answer.There is no win and lose like sports game.“Do it your way” makes people open minded and satisfied.
- Q4 : Do you have anything to pay attention when you do your work?
- I feel retro things and well used things have power to fascinate people.Those have feelings and memories of the users, and those memories weather the thing old in good way, and I guess anybody has such moment that the thing grabs your interest when you met it at first time.I just want to create portrait of things just like that which makes people fascinated.I always keep it in mind that not only its strong presence, but also I add one additional fun as a spice such as lighting and/or arrangement of print position on T-shirt.As well, making one more additional thing which belongs to the concept of the T-shirt.In the case of MHAK, I made tabloid whose backside becomes poster, and in the case of skateboard truck, I made exclusively 50 copies of silk screen printed papers.
- Q5： What point do you want to strongly appeal to everyone on your work this time?
- Although it might be a big ward, I think RUTSUBO has had less collaborations which is hardcore skateboarding just like this before.
In that space, I could drop my photo.I would be happy if I could cast everyone that makes people might think “what the hell is this lump of metal?” at their first sight.I hope if I could influence people even a little by my artwork with this opportunity, just like some people begin skateboarding or begin taking photos and so on. - Q6：Finally, please describe what made you to participate RUTUBO project.
- Although it depends on brands, collaboration with artists might be spot or season, but not everytime.However for RUTSUBO, someone provides their artwork everytime and the brand aggressively collaborates with artists which is rare, and it is grateful, and glad to me.
It’s not easy to arrange such a lot of lineups by myself alone.As well, RUTSUBO has playful mind and it is similar to mine as I said “additional fun as a spice”.These two points made me join RUTSUBO this time.Thank you RUSTUBO to let me join.
